Job Purpose.
Laboratory is modern and well equipped to handle analytical requirements of the Refinery. Operates round the clock working in 3 shifts.
 To contribute and maintain laboratory as an outstanding and dependable petroleum testing lab in the region.
 To handle shifts independently, takes responsibility of the laboratory and its activities.
 To analyse and provide properties of intermediate products’ streams of lab, which form the basis for optimisation of yield and quality.
 To be certifying authority for Lab’s finished products, import / export parcels and jet fuel from Aviation, Airbase, Airbase, and Joint Industry Fuel Farm at Dubai International Airport.
 To co-ordinate and execute all the analytical requirements of group companies.
 To maintain Quality System of the laboratory. To support effluent treatment and environmental control.
 To be a part of SERT. (Shift Emergency Response team.)
Dimensions (NHT / REFORMER NOT INCLUDED)
 Certifies products worth about US$ 4500 million in 2006.
 Total Refinery Investment : US$ 304 million
 Value of assets (Analysers) managed US$ 3million
 No of shift chemists : 9
Duties & Responsibilities
 Signing authority for certification of all products including Jet fuel. Takes responsibility
and certifies products for marketing domestically and internationally. Certification
samples are retained for 90 days for any future verification in case of a dispute. An error
in certification can lead to rejection of cargo or discounted sale, affecting profit and
       reputation.
 Co-ordinates with group companies and Surveyor companies to meet their analytical requirements. Prioritising and sequencing the analyses is made to meet loading and unloading prospects of products. Any delay in publishing test results may result in demurrage.
 Performs as a quality inspector for Aviation Quality Control Organization. Analyse and certify the quality of Jet Fuel at every stage until to the point of loading to aircrafts. The hard copies of the quality certificates are maintained at the airport as records. These certificates have information to trace back the quality of Jet fuel at point of production.
 Conducts analyses using sophisticated and complex analysers like Gas Chromatographs, Inductively coupled Plasma Optical emission spectroscope, X-Ray fluorescence spectroscope, High Performance Liquid chromatographs, Octane engines, High Frequency Reciprocating Rig, Atomic Adsorption Spectroscope, Trace level ( parts per billion) mercury and sulphur analysers etc. In depth knowledge and technical expertise are basic requirements for operation of these analysers.
       1) Hydrocarbon samples from the refinery to optimise production and to certify
         finished products.
2) Utility and Caustic samples to optimise consumption of chemicals.
                       3) Effluent treatment plant ( ETP) stream samples and biologically activated
sludge to monitor efficiency of Sequential Bio-Reactors.
                       4) Emission samples (Liquid and gaseous) to monitor the impact on
                            environment.
                   5) New condensates for property evaluation so that yield patterns
                        and economics can be estimated.
                    6) Corrosion products like scales and deposits for composition to asses
                        and control corrosion.
 Computes final test result in required unit of measurement from raw analytical
          data
 Prepares standard operating procedures for the analysers to adhere to the latest revisions in the test methods and safety practices. Thus assets (analysers) are managed for optimum utilisation.
 The analytical instruments in the laboratory are highly sensitive. Any minor deviation in test results may lead to quality giveaway and hence affects economics, example: for every one deg C variation in Flash point of Jet Fuel, impact on yield is estimated to be 1.32 % Vol and at current market prices this amounts to 10,000 USD for a certified Jet fuel tank of capacity 10,000 Cu.M.(These analysers are calibrated and verified for performances periodically to maintain the integrity of laboratory test results)
 Troubleshoots the analysers to minimise downtime. Minimum of 95% availability is ensured at any point of time. Outages of analysers lead to expensive outsourcing of analyses.
 Prepares and maintains Lab reports, quality certificates, calibration report etc for future references.
 Issues Work permits and follows up the job for safety adherence.
 Serves as a member of fire fighting crew as stated in the Incident command system to safeguard the facilities.
 Trains new recruits in analytical methods, safety practices and compliance to EHS regulations.
         Knowledge, Skills and Experience
 Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry specialising in Organic, Inorganic
and Physical Chemistry from a recognized university with high percentage of
     marks.
 Requires a broader and deeper understanding of practical procedures, specialized
techniques, professional discipline and theoretical knowledge.
 Knowledge and skills acquired through 7 to 10 years experience in a refinery or petrochemical laboratory.
 Related knowledge of refinery /petrochemical plants.
 Capability in handling, calibrating modern analyzers.
 Knowledge in computer applications would be advantageous.
